NDP response to heart surgeries delayed due to unvaccinated in ICU

HAMILTON — NDP MPP Sandy Shaw (Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas) released this statement in response to reports that heart surgeries were cancelled Monday at Hamilton General Hospital to make space in the ICU for unvaccinated COVID patients:
“It’s devastating and frustrating that patients in critical need of heart surgery have had their procedures delayed due to unvaccinated patients taking up much-needed ICU capacity.
Hospitals and health care workers are stretched perilously thin, and Ontario’s vaccination rates are still not where we need them to be to prevent outbreaks, severe illness and the overwhelming of hospital resources. It is abhorrent that the Ford government is refusing to provide hospital workers and patients with protection from anti-public health harassment.
Ford must come out of hiding and throw everything he can at protecting health care workers and patients, as well as increasing vaccination rates in a last-mile strategy.”
